A little history about the Annual Editions: Each year’s design is from several prototypes submitted by the creative team for consideration, and conformed to “themes”, spanning three-year periods for the Trilogy. However, Swarovski discontinued the trilogy concept in 2011, but continued with the Endangered Wildlife theme with the 2011 and 2012 Annual Editions. So, there is now only one separate piece issued annually, BUT there are literally Dozens of ‘ Issues Related to the Annual Edition’ produced each year. Also noteworthy is each of the Annual Editions are engraved with the Designer’s initials.
AE Dolphins Signed by the Designer at a Swarovski Event.
Below are the Designer’s Initials ‘MSt’ engraved on the piece.
The Dolphins – ‘Lead Me’, designed by Michael Stamey, were the first issue of the Mother and Child Trilogy.
Sadly, Michael no longer works for Swarovski and is living in Florida. He was much loved by Crystal Fanatics worldwide. In fact, Michael Stamey designed the entire Mother and Child Trilogy, the only Swarovski designer to do so.
The Dolphins are the reason I began collecting Swarovski Crystal.
A funny, personal story:
We were in Savannah, where a gift shop there was a Swarovski retailer. When I saw the AE Dolphins, I asked how much they were because I instantly wanted them; the owner told me they were not For Sale. This was in 1991 after the Dolphins had retired, and I knew nothing about Swarovski Crystal! So, in my own indomitable way, I said, ‘What the hell do you mean they are not for sale’? I didn’t understand why they would be displayed and not available to purchase. Of course, he told me they had already retired, and I said, ‘ok, I’ll buy those’. “No you won’t”, he says, those are mine! That Christmas, my husband was able to obtain them from a dealer in No. Carolina (we bought a lot of stuff from him!) and that’s how my journey as a Swarovski Collector began. I’ve lost count, but I have well over 1,000 pieces, and they are all displayed. My home is a museum.
The Dolphins were introduced in 1990 at the Swarovski GALA (almost a thing of the past in the U.S.A!) at Disney World in Orlando, Florida. They are 3″ x 4.75″ x 2″ in size and bear the Swan / SCS Logo. They retailed for $225.
Secondary Market values are approximately $585. However, Recent Sales on eBay show their ‘real present day value’:
Dolphins with COA & Envelope No Box $140.05
Dolphins with COA & Box, No Foam Insert $125.00
Dolphins with Box, No COA $206.65
Dolphins MIB (Mint in Box) $255.99 $243.50 $340.00 $249.99 $272.00
